Reflection Visitors Center - Transforming Mental Health Awareness and Support in Israel

Background

Sha’ar Menashe Mental Health Center is Israel's largest psychiatric facility, offering comprehensive mental health care services. Located northeast of Hadera, the facility plays a crucial role in mental health care nationwide, treating thousands of individuals annually through specialized departments, including rehabilitation, trauma care, dual diagnosis (mental illness and addiction), and long-term psychiatric care. It is also home to the Maximum-Security Division (Forensic Division), the only unit of its kind in Israel.

Beyond providing medical care, Sha’ar Menashe adopts a holistic approach in its dedication to patient rehabilitation and reintegration into society, deepening the recognition of the needs and rights of both patients and society as a whole. Through a variety of unique initiatives in a supportive environment, the mental health center empowers patients to reconnect with their community, while striving to dismantle stigmas and promote inclusion for individuals navigating mental health vulnerabilities.

The Need

Mental health is profoundly shaped by experiences people face throughout their lives, both personal events and at the national level. As Israeli society contends with the effects of war and collective trauma, better understanding and support for mental health and its impact on the individual and the community has never been more critical. More than 520,000 Israelis are expected to suffer from post-trauma as a result of the past year, and one out of five adults have expressed concern for their mental health. The global scope of mental health challenges reflects the magnitude of the need on the national level: hundreds of millions of individuals worldwide suffer from a broad spectrum of mental health challenges. Yet, social stigmas and insufficient awareness persist, creating barriers to identifying mental health vulnerabilities, accessing care, and achieving recovery.

Reflection Center: Vision and Objectives

Our vision is to lay the groundwork for a society that recognizes the strength of the individual and the community to overcome adversity, celebrating the human spirit as an endless source of resilience, creativity, and renewal. Reflection is more than just a visitors’ center it is a movement toward a future where we look at one another with empathy, understanding, and hope.
